Let Us Remember ... and Never Forget
Today is Memorial Day. A federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a day for visiting cemeteries & memorials to remember those who died in the line of duty. Individuals often place American flags on the graves of fallen military personnel and some churches fill their front yard with flags to remember the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms.
The holiday was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, as proclaimed by General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Memorial Day is distinct from Veterans Day, which honors all who have served in the U.S. military, living and dead, while Memorial Day specifically recognizes those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
